From: Reading, PA
Current release: You Don't Know The Half Of It! (2001)
Sound clip: Attack of the 40 ft. Woman
Review: The Afterglows play a high-energy blend of punk,
ska, pop and metal. With two years of performances and two EPs already under their belts,
the band released their first full-length CD, You Don't Know The Half Of It!, on
the indie label DRP Records in late 2001. This is definitely one of the bands to watch in
the rapidly-emerging Reading music scene! --AM

From: Bethlehem, PA
Current release: My Violence (2004 EP)
Sound clip: My Violence
Review: AJAR ("A Journey Around Reality") is one of eastern PA's
most exciting young rock bands. Drawing inspiration from bands such as Breaking Benjamin, Fuel,
Sevendust, Staind and Tool, AJAR is hopeful their high-energy nü-metal will bring them a
comparable level of success and recognition. With solid fan and radio support and a WXLV Battle
of the Bands victory under their belts, they are well on their way! --AM
ANTHROPHOBIA
URL: http://www.anthrophobia.com
Who: Frank Phobia, Joe Donato, Brent Black, Eric Bess
From: Reading, PA
Current release: Magnetic (2004)
Sound clip: Dopamine
Review: Anthrophobia's story is not unlike the stories of many
bands who have flirted with major label distribution. Once signed to Oxygen Records/BMG,
Anthrophobia had a lot of problems with the major label and was eventually granted a release from
its contract. How Anthrophobia differs from other bands is that its lead singer,
Frank Phobia, then started his own indie label (Reading-based DRP Records) and has been doing great
things for local music ever since. If you like the loud sounds, growling vocals and killer grooves
of hardcore metal, you'll love Anthrophobia! --AM
ARCANUM
URL: http://www.arcanum-music.com
Who: James Heckler, Mark Walter, Michael Weiss, Matthew Sienzant
From: Lehigh Valley, PA
Current release: Arcanum (2004)
Sound clip: See You Around
Review: Arcanum promises "the best prog-infused rock music that the Lehigh
Valley has to offer", and they deliver on that promise! The band's influences include hard rock and metal
legends such as Megadeth, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne and Pantera, as well as progressive mainstays such as Dream
Theater and Rush. The result is a highly original style that balances challenging arrangements with
accessible melodies. The guitar work and rhythm section are tight, and the vocals are top notch. Bottom line,
Arcanum rocks! Definitely worth a listen! --AM
ARMY OF ME

From: Washington, D.C.
Current release: Cactus Patch (2001)
Sound clip: These Hands
Review: The well-deserved winners of the 2001 WHFS "Big Break" contest, Army of Me
(formerly Cactus Patch) will blow you away with their unique, emotional, well-polished sound. Drawing influences from a diverse
group of artists including Jeff Buckley, Weezer, Pavement, Radiohead, The Ramones and Peter Gabriel, Army of Me
has arrived at a sound all their own that stands out among the area's local bands. Check 'em out today! --AM
AZTEK TRIP

From: Allentown, PA
Current release:Average Day (1999)
Sound clip: Lost and Found
Review:These guys have been around for a few years now,
and they've built up quite the repertoire of original songs. Strongly influenced by Live
and Fuel, Aztek Trip has showcased their emotional live sets with an impressive list
of headliners. Their most interesting factoid is probably their appearance on the
Jenny Jones show...twice! --AM
BAREFOOT

Who: Amanda Hoffman, Kristen Kirby, Tony Halchak, Dave Kirby, Jess Kirby, Christine Attanasio
From: Northeast PA
Current release: The Fallen Whirled EP (2004)
Sound clip: To Understand
Review: Barefoot is an exciting young band that combines elements of
bluegrass and rock into a style they've labeled "grass-rock". Their two female lead singers create some
wonderful harmonies, and the introduction of mandolin and violin into the standard rock band configuration
gives them a unique sound. Their faith-based lyrics provide a positive message without coming across as
preachy. Give Barefoot a listen! --AM
BERNIE BERNIE HEADFLAP
URL: http://www.garageband.com/bbh
Who: Alan McCabe
From: West Chester, PA
Current release: Stone Cold Blue (2003)
Sound clip: Action is Fast!
Review: According to their web site, "Bernie Bernie Headflap is one of
those bands that you would probably get beaten up for listening to." I'm not sure about that, but their
unique style certainly makes them stand out from the pack. The closest comparisons are probably They Might
Be Giants and Ween, but with influences spanning the classic rock, hip-hop and electronica genres,
Bernie Bernie headflap has a sound all their own! --AM
BLAC BOTUM

From: Salem, NJ
Current release: Demonstrating / Live Works from the Year 2003 (2003 demos)
Sound clip: Trip Out The House
Review: Blac Botum consists of six classically-trained musicians,
all of whom play multiple instruments. The members' influences span virtually all genres, from classic
rock to jazz/fusion to blues to jam bands to DJs. Their originals gracefully merge these diverse
influences into a cohesive, funky, groove-based result. If you're looking for something a little
out of the ordinary, check out Blac Botum! --AM

Review: After relocating from Atlanta to Philadelphia, Andy Browne formed
The Andy Browne Trio in 2002. The band's promotional disc from their upcoming album Chemical Road
consists of three tracks that hint at great things to come. Drawing from influences that span four decades
and several genres, The Andy Browne Trio delivers well-polished pop/rock originals that are sure to turn
some heads! --AM
BURNING BLUE
URL: http://www.burningblueband.com
Who: Randy Hock, Donnie Knaub, Chad Gossard, Kevin Kresge
From: Lancaster, PA
Current release: Seconds From Salvation (2003)
Sound clip: Wicked City
Review: Burning Blue is described in their press kit as a "rock band
with hard driven hooks and powerful lyrics." The band definitely lives up to the description,
delivering positive messages via both heavy riff-oriented rock and sensitive balladry. Noted for
their cover of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (in rememberance of the victims of September 11), Burning
Blue continued in that spirit with an impressive guitar-only rendition of "America The Beautiful" on
Seconds From Salvation. These guys have a refreshing attitude and some refreshing music. --AM
CATTAIL ROAD BAND

Who: Darren Francis, Brian Smith, Mike Walker, Greg Smith, Phil Swaby, Richard Krents
From: Poolesville, MD
Current release: 442 (2001)
Sound clip: How Could You Leave Me
Review: A great example of why I hate to categorize bands, Cattail Road's
blend of country, rock and blues evokes the genre-crossing style of the Eagles and many Southern Rock bands.
With more than 200 (!) original songs to choose from, you can bet you're getting 11 very solid songs
on the group's debut CD, 442, and many, many more at their gigs! --AM
CELL 7
URL: http://www.cell7.net
Who: John, Eric, Justin, Craig, Bill
From: Berwick, PA
Current release: Cell 7 (2004 demo)
Sound clip: Wake Me Up
Review: Cell 7 includes former members of Poptart Monkeys,
O-zone Babies, Glitch and Brokn. The band describes their music as having a "heavy melodic
sound ranging from Disturbed to Tool." Their originals definitely evoke those bands, as
well as some of their other influences (Creed, Chevelle, Godsmack, Staind, etc.). Cell 7's
demo CD leaves little doubt that this band has a very bright future! --AM
CLASHING PLAID
URL: http://www.clashingplaid.com
Who: Steve Ackerman, Kenny Leso, Anthony Porter, Andy Watts
From: Perkasie, PA
Current release: Mix and Match (2004)
Sound clip: Happy Little Hell
Review: With influences from The Beatles to The Ramones to Foo Fighters,
Clashing Plaid melds classic rock, modern rock, punk rock, and even blues into a sound all their own.
Lyrically, their music largely focuses on relationships gone wrong, with a defiantly
optimistic "I'm just going to get on with my life" undertone. Cool tunes, cool band! --AM
COMMON ENEMY
URL: http://www.commonenemy2000.com
Who: Sonic (X), Justin Enemy, Greg Disorder, Devon "Tank" the Animal
From: Reading, PA
Current release: Late Night Skate (2004)
Sound clip: 7 Ply
Review: Common Enemy is a hardcore/punk band who owe a debt to early 1980's
punk. The band's aggressive lyrics are inspired by "skateboarding, thrashing, nintendo, and horror movies",
and are delivered in an uncompromising rapid-fire scream. Beneath the screams are very clear messages,
though, making the songs worth a much closer listen. Check 'em out! --AM
CREAM CHARGERS

Who: Dean Rosenzweig, Debbie O'Mara, Jay Elberson, Brendan Gallagher
From: Philadelphia, PA
Current release: 130 Square Feet of Noise (2003)
Sound clip: Stone
Review: Cream Chargers have been described as "indie", "emo",
"heavy metal", "punk rock", "drug rock", "hardcore punk" and "power rock". Maybe "indescribable"
is a better term! Regardless of what you call them, the band delivers 9 solid category-defying rock
(yes, I think we're safe with "rock") tunes on their latest disc, 130 Square Feet of Noise.
Check 'em out! --AM
THE CUT-OFFS

Who: Matt Mulhall, Ryan Adie, Eric Schultz, Keion Nostadt, Tony Cadaver
From: Schwenksville, PA
Current release: Fat, Drunk and Angry (2003)
Sound clip: Firecracker 69
Review: They have the two-minute songs. They have the
buzzing guitars. They even have the shouts of "Oi! Oi! Oi!", "Ohh Yeah" and "Hey! Hey! Hey!".
Yes, The Cut-Offs are a punk band through and through. But what sets The Cut-Offs apart
is their sense of humor. They really don't look the part, they come from the decidedly
UN-punk Philly suburb of Schwenksville, and their lyrics are hilarious. Get
Fat, Drunk and Angry today! (take that however you want!) --AM
DIVINATION
URL: http://www.divinationmetal.com
Who: Matt McCullough, John Scherrer, Jason Denunzio, Chuck Lazarz, Scott Davis
From: Reading, PA
Current release: Three Nails of Fate (2003)
Sound clip: Three Nails of Fate
Review: If you enjoy the relaxing New Age stylings of bands like Enya,
Divination is probably not the band for you. Divination is hands-down the heaviest local band
I have ever reviewed for this site. Whereas some bands are difficult to categorize, there is no mistaking
the music of Divination for anything but death metal. Chainsaw guitars and machine gun drums
provide the backdrop for alarmingly throat-shredding vocals. If the melodic rock that passes for
"heavy metal" these days is making you sick, Divination may be the cure you've been looking for! --AM
THE DRAMA CLUB
URL: http://www.thedramaclubmusic.com
Who: Nick Coyle, Nate Bevan, Jon Novichick, Randy Elmy, R.J. MacLean
From: Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, PA
Current release: Greatest Hits (2005)
Sound clip: The Callout
Review: Don't let the album name and polished sound fool you:
Greatest Hits is the first offering from The Drama Club. Rising from the ashes
of major label bands Lifer and Stalemate, The Drama Club has delivered an extremely well-written
EP that is sure to garner major label attention of its own. The band's melodic punk/pop/rock sound
is made possible by their driving rhythm section, masterful guitar work, hook-filled choruses and
Nick Coyle's unparalleled powerful, heartfelt vocals. Bands this good don't stay in our backyard
for long, so go see them live and pick up their disc while you still can! --AM
EASTCIDE
URL: http://www.eastcide.com
Who: Jakob D., Markie B., Champy, Ryan, Swifty, Luke
From: Plymouth, MA (second home in Reading, PA!)
Current release: Eastcide (2001)
Sound clip: Green
Review: Eastcide is billed as "one of the first bands on the
East Coast ever to introduce hip-hop into the metal/hardcore scene." That description alone
goes a long way towards describing the band's sound. Also described as "loud rock", Eastcide
is more than just loud: They have a polished sound that is not far from some of the harder
groups on the radio today (think Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Mudvayne, etc.). --AM
EAZY FOUR
URL: http://www.eazyfour.com
Who: Bob Reilly, Matt McCann, Adam Chantry, Jason Stolnis
From: Philadelphia, PA
Current release: Come On Fantasy (2001)
Sound clip: A Minor
Review: Eazy Four delivers 8 solid rock tunes on its debut
release, Come On Fantasy. It's clearly evident that most of these songs were written
on an acoustic guitar, and the acoustic guitar and flowing vocals definitely form the glue that
holds the songs together. But bluesy-electric guitar lines and a solid rhythm section add
depth, and elevate the music to something more than acoustic guitar rock. --AM
ELECTRIC CANDY SHOP
URL: http://www.electriccandyshop.com
Who: Tony, Pat, Todd, Mark, Fred
From: Pittston, PA
Current release: Theories of Emotion (2002)
Sound clip: Fallen
Review: If you like Our Lady Peace and Fuel (and why wouldn't
you?), you have something in common with Electric Candy Shop. Citing the aforementioned bands as
their primary influences, Electric Candy shop delivers "emotionally charged modern rock" originals
in the spirit of their favorite major-label bands. Their Theories of Emotion disc is
impressive, enjoyable, and a worthwhile purchase! --AM
ELYSION FIELDS
URL: http://www.elysionfields.com
Who: Craig Hickle, Paul Stuckey, Joe Bressler
From: East Petersburg, PA
Current release: Life Long (2004 EP)
Sound clip: Bound Forever
Review: Elysion Fields is a Central PA thrash metal band. The
band's uncompromising sound combines riff-heavy chainsaw-like guitar and a killer speed-rhythm section
with aggressively delivered (yet perfectly decipherable) vocals. Elysion Fields is right up there
with the heaviest bands in the area, and is definitely worth a listen if you like your metal HEAVY! --AM
EMILY'S TOYBOX
URL: http://www.emilystoybox.com
Who: Mike Wise, Wade Corbin, Todd Sensenich, Leon Karpovich
From: Harrisburg, PA
Current release: Kindly Remove The Stick... (2000)
Sound clip: Celeberty
Review: Emily's Toybox has been a local favorite since forming
in 1997. The group has already released 4 CDs showcasing its self-descriribed power-pop/neo-punk
style, and its evolving lineup continues to impress at live shows! --AM
EVOLVE
URL: http://www.evolverocks.com
Who: Hutch, Jim Long, Joe Sheldon, Matt Gromis, Stacks
From: East Petersburg, PA
Current release: Evolve (2004 demo)
Sound clip: Bastard Games
Review: Evolve combines the intricate arrangements and complex rhythms
of heavier prog-rock bands like A Perfect Circle with vocal stylings and 2-part harmonies reminiscent of
Alice in Chains. Winners of the 2004 Battle of the Bands at Fat Daddy's in York, the band's first
full-length release is due later this year. If their 3-song demo and fan popularity is any indication,
Evolve will be an exciting band to watch in 2004 and beyond! --AM
EYE WISH EYE
URL: http://www.eyewisheye.com
Who: Karl Greathouse, Kris Margiotta, Barry Donlin
From: Lancaster, PA
Current release: Make Something Happen (2002)
Sound clip: The Crow
Review: Eye Wish Eye is a straight-ahead rock band
from Lancaster with roots dating back to 1989. The band's self-produced CD, Make
Something Happen, is a testament to their years of experience in the local music
scene. Drawing from eclectic influences ranging from soul to classic rock to modern rock,
Eye Wish Eye delivers a surprisingly cohesive style of melodic rock that is at once
musically interesting and highly enjoyable. Definitely worth a listen! --AM
FINK'S CONSTANT
URL: http://www.finksconstant.com
Who: Mike Fox, Chad McCartney, Don Wood, Marlin Bressi, Zak Nye, Chip Tarkett
From: Harrisburg, PA
Current release: Two Wrongs (2004)
Sound clip: Two Wrongs
Review: Listening to Fink's Constant, you're more likely to believe
they hail from a Caribbean island than from Harrisburg, PA. The band's blend of reggae and ska sets
them apart from the rest of our local music scene. Influenced by (and covering) artists including
Bob Marley, Shaggy and Sublime, Fink's Constant's horn section, hilarious upbeat lyrics, tendency to break into
improvisation jams, and "get up and dance" attitude make them a popular live act. --AM
DAVID FIORENZA
URL: http://www.davidfiorenza.com
Who: David Fiorenza
From: Philadelphia, PA
Current release: Fiology (2005)
Sound clip: Where I'm Goin'
Review: Philly's own David Fiorenza has already enjoyed a great deal
of success in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and is now concentrating on sharing his brand of
"contemporary country rock" within our own great country's borders. Fiorenza's latest disc,
Fiology is a compilation of his best work from the past 5 years, with a few new, live and
remixed tracks. You might catch him live under the name "Fiorenza-Dowlin" (with sideman Wayne
Dowlin), or as half of the duo "Tom & Dave" (with accordian player Tom Sandri). His blend of
Americana, country, pop, rock and folk is delivered via excellent songwriting and performing you
are sure to enjoy! --AM
FIVE LOCKS
URL: http://home.comcast.net/~fivelocks
Who: Jesse Keim, Kurt Vivaldi, Trevor Davis, Dave Orth
From: Reading, PA
Current release: Five Locks (2004 EP)
Sound clip: I Know
Review: Five Locks delivers a melodic hard rock sound that some might
describe as "Deftones meet Incubus." The band members have a wide range of influences, including the
aforementioned bands as well as Alice in Chains, Sevendust, Korn, Metallica, GNR, and the alternative
bands of the early '90s. Their tunes are catchy, but do not compromise on the hard rock sound that
is Five Locks' staple. Check 'em out! --AM
THE FIVE PERCENT

From: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, PA
Current release: Our Life (2006)
Sound clip: Walk Alone (from 2005's 3483 Seconds Of Your Life)
Review: The Five Percent rose from the ashes of The Collective and Six-Second Yellow in 2005,
and has in the short time since then become a force to be reckoned with in the Pennsylvania music scene. After selling over 2500
copies of their debut album, the band made a major leap forward with their impressive sophomore effort, Our Life. If you're
looking for quality musicianship and excellent songwriting, look no further than The Five Percent! --AM
14 MILE DRIVE
URL: http://www.14miledrive.com
Who: Matthew Gaus, Bryan Glahn, Vinny Farrell, Adam Snyder
From: Wilkes Barre, PA
Current release: Running Through December (2003)
Sound clip: Seven Reasons
Review: 14 Mile Drive is the epitome of the "yin" and the "yang" in music.
Their originals are sometimes heavy but often delicate, hopeful but sometimes bleak, but always melodic
and intense. From the band's press kit: "Their sound balances between the grit and the grind you would expect
from a band born deep in America's coal mining region, while at the same time providing the listener with a
keen ear for the delicate melody and heartfelt lyrics reminiscent of any classic rock band". Drawing on diverse
influences that range from The Pixies to Tool to Radiohead to AC/DC to U2, 14 Mile Drive is poised to make
some noise in 2005 and beyond. Keep an eye out for their new CD soon! --AM
FREUDIAN SLIP

Who: Matthew J. Bush
From: Littlestown, PA
Current release: Freudian Slip (2004)
Sound clip: I Started Laughing
Review: I've always found it to be extremely cool when people
find creative ways to combine two of their loves into one project (note the marriage
of computers and music that is this web site). My former college roommate and good friend Matt
Bush has combined his love of music with his passion for social work in his Freudian Slip
project. Matt wrote, performed, recorded, produced, and is distributing Freudian Slip,
a CD he packages with his self-penned book, "Utilizing Music as a Coping Skill: Featuring the
Music of Freudian Slip." Therapists are sure to find Matt's innovative techniques worthy of
exploring. The excellent modern-rock influenced Freudian Slip CD is available individually
for the casual music fan, and is definitely worth checking out! --AM
HIEROSONIC
URL: http://www.hierosonic.com
Who: Ben Stewart, Jarred Cannon, Chad Adams, Mike Stang, Mark Bohn
From: Harrisburg, PA
Current release: Pornos and Razorblades (2005)
Sound clip: American's America
Review: Hierosonic is an exciting young band that describes its
unique style as "hard rock with electronic and ambient atmosphere." The band has a highly polished
sound and features emotionally-charged lyrics delivered over often multilayered instrumentation
and driving rhythms. The band members' musical influences span just about every imaginable genre,
from hard rock to industrial, classic rock to alternative, punk to indie. Their music is not easily
categorized, but some of my personal favorite tracks on their disc have strong Nine Inch Nails
undertones (perhaps with a bit of Tool thrown in!). Hierosonic is definitely a band on the rise - do
yourself a favor and give 'em a listen! --AM
HONEYSMASH
URL: http://www.myspace.com/honeysmash
Who: Brian Duffy
From: Philadelphia, PA
Current release: Coming soon
Sound clip: Coming soon
Review: HoneySmash (formerly R.A.W.) is a hard rock band that
combines powerful vocals with hook-filled heavy riffs and kick-ass grooves. The band cites modern
rock influences including Audioslave, Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver, but is also (unmistakably)
inspired by '70s rock and '90s grunge. This band was one of my favorite local bands in
their earlier incarnation as Huzzavox, and HoneySmash has picked up right where Huzzavox left off.
Do yourself a big favor and check this band out! --AM
HOODLEY BAH

Who: Mike Economy, Tony Gromalski, John Pinkey, Chris Owens
From: Mahanoy City, PA
Current release: Bad Things For Good People (2001)
Sound clip: Don't Want Her
Review: Hoodley Bah's press kit says their name is the only
way to describe their music. You might question that until you actually give their debut CD,
Bad Things For Good People a listen. Influenced by everything from classic rock
to today's punk/pop, Hoodley Bah has carved out a sound all its own. --AM
DON HOSLER
URL: http://www.donhosler.com
Who: Don Hosler
From: St. Clair, PA
Current release: Boardwalk of Broken Dreams (2001)
Sound clip: Give It To Ya Straight
Review: You may know Don Hosler from his 10+ years of experience
in the local music scene, playing with bands such as Romeo, Aslan, and Cherry Pie. In 2001, he
fulfilled a lifelong dream by releasing an album of all-original material. If you like the
straight-ahead rock of the 1980's, you'll appreciate what Don has to offer! --AM
I WANT TO KILL YOU

Who: Mike Ernstam, Hank Kryeski, Troy Hinson, Sean Cameron, Rich Buffum
From: Kutztown, PA
Current release: The Inevitability of Mind Control Through Nanotechnology (2004)
Sound clip: Drawn and Quartered At Gunpoint
Review: You barely need to get past the song titles on I Want To Kill You's latest
album to understand why they describe themselves as "a brutal metal band with a sense of humor." While the band's
instrumentalists rip away at death metal grooves that would scare your parents, the two vocalists trade screamed
lyrics that range from violent to hilarious. The dainty orchestration that kicks off the album and makes a
reappearance a few songs later also provides some comic relief to the otherwise "decisively controlled, bizarre,
chaotic metal" that makes up the rest of this intriguing album! --AM
IGNARUS
URL: http://www.litomusicgroup.com/ignarus.htm
Who: Kevin Showmaker, Dominic Vigilante
From: Philadelphia, PA
Current release: Ignarus (2005)
Sound clip: Onto Something
Review: Ignarus is a Philly-based hard rock band that features the talents
of singer/guitarist Kevin Showmaker and drummer Dominic Vigilante. The band cites influences including
Black Sabbath, Black Label Society and Audioslave, but it was their obvious Alice In Chains influence
that first drew me in. Several of the songs on their debut CD could pass for lost Alice In Chains tunes,
with their metal-meets-grunge crunchy riffs, octave-apart harmonies, and unabashedly wailed lead
vocals. But calling Ignarus an Alice In Chains knock-off would be selling them short. Their album
features some great songwriting and performing, and the band's many talents shine through in every song.
I promise will enjoy this band even if "Facelift" evokes nothing more than cosmetic surgery in your mind,
and "pinch harmonics" has no meaning whatsoever to you. This is absolutely one of the best releases
of 2005. Visit the Ignarus web site immediately and get your copy! --AM
INNER-G
URL: http://www.innergband.com
Who: TR Wampler, The GIB, Mike Evil, Greg Harper
From: Lancaster, PA
Current release: Inner-G (2004)
Sound clip: Bad Blood
Review: Inner-G is a self-proclaimed "high energy hard rock" group
from Central PA. The band's influences include Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Godsmack and Metallica.
Their chunky riffs, hammering rhythm section and sometimes-searing/sometimes-soaring vocals definitely
evoke elements of each of those bands, but the band's overall sound is definitely an original one.
If you like hard rock, give Inner-G a listen! --AM
J.P. AND THE KEYSTONES

Who: John Pospischil, Jason Douglas, Chad Fehr, Brian Pettit
From: Emmaus, PA
Current release: J.P. and the Keystones (2007 promo CD)
Sound clip: Fly Little Darlin', Fly
Review: John Pospischil has been creating music since he was in Junior High, but
it wasn't until Easter 2005 that he found his true calling. On that day his wife's grandfather handed him a banjo,
and he hasn't looked back since. John's original folk/bluegrass project, J.P. and the Keystones, features his
banjo, mandolin and acoustic guitar playing, as well as rootsy vocals that evoke a simpler time. If you are seeking
a unique sound from the local music scene, look no further! --AM

Who: Larry Kennedy, Garrick Chow, Bryce Connor, Laine Wehler
From: Harrisburg, PA
Current release: Soap Opera (1999)
Sound clip: Who Is God (from 1997's Kinky Boot Beast)
Review: Another top-notch Pennsylvania band,
The Jellybricks have a polished sound that certainly sounds like it could
have mass appeal (hint, hint). Personally, they remind me of a mix between
Soul Asylum and Cracker. Good stuff! --AM
JUDGEMENT

Who: Dominic Valenti, Brandon Stafaniak,
Pat Newby, Mike Jellen, Tyler Malayter
From: State College, PA
Current release: Motorvation (2001)
Sound clip: Come Down
Review: Judgement delivers no-nonsense hard rock. Their
style is reminiscent of '80s metal bands (Guns N' Roses, in particular), but also reveals
alt-rock influences such as Pearl Jam and Godsmack. Motorvation is a solid debut
CD, and hints at great things to come in the future! --AM
JUICED
URL: http://www.juicedrocks.com
Who: Carrie Rapaport, Doug Buch, Norm Marks, David Beckwith, Beth Karpovich
From: York, PA
Current release: None...yet.
Sound clip: Ditto.
Review: WOW. It's been a while since a band has created this much
of a buzz in the local music scene. This is the band that musicians in other bands wish they were
part of. Made up of five veterans of the local music scene, Juiced has hit upon a formula that
really works. Carrie's voice rivals the best in the biz, and she'll amaze when she sweetly sings
No Doubt only to turn around to tear it up with some Limp Bizkit. Definitely the band to watch in
2001 and beyond! --AM
KAIROS
URL: http://www.kairosband.com
Who: Jason Sturm, Shar Sturm, Josh Sturm, Drew Rodaniche
From: State College, PA
Current release: Rethink : Reshape (2005)
Sound clip: Saturate
Review: Kairos is a four-piece progressive rock band that mixes
"ambient melodies with driving rhythms and emotion drived lyrics." The band has an incredibly
tight sound and well-structured songs that bear the unmistakable mark of two of their big
influences: Tool and Pink Floyd. This is also the first band I've seen make mention of Muse
as an influence (nice!). Their current release, Rethink : Reshape is a must-hear, and
I understand their live shows are also excellent. For those of you who might be wondering what's
up with ¾ of the band sharing a last name, check out the band's history on their web site -
it's a great story! --AM
K8
URL: http://www.k8music.com
Who: K8
From: Nanticoke, PA
Current release: Something Out Of Nothing (2004)
Sound clip: Wake Up
Review: After stints as a member of Clove and Mighty Aphrodite, K8
(pronounced "Kate", not "Kay-eight") is now on her own, and is receiving rave reviews for her incredible
solo material. On her debut CD, Because, K8 proved her credibility as a songwriter and performer
with stripped-down songs comprised of vocals and guitar or piano only. Her 2004 EP Something Out Of
Nothing features five excellent full-band originals recorded by K8 with three members of The Badlees.
K8's passionate delivery of her genuinely heartfelt lyrics provides an impressive and enjoyable ride.

STEVE LARET
URL: http://www.stevelaret.net
Who: Steve Laret
From: Allentown, PA
Current release: Passion (2004)
Sound clip: Paris
Review: Originally from Eagle River, Alaska, singer/songwriter
Steve Laret now calls Allentown home - but you might want to call him before swinging by for a visit.
After releasing his first album, St. Peter's Project, while still in high school, Laret
traveled from Pennsylvania to Alaska and Canada to Mexico, inspiring his second album,
Leaving St. Peter's. Having conquered America, he next toured Europe, where he paid
the bills by performing, and wrote his third album, Passion. And all of this before his
21st birthday! Laret's musical influences include John Denver, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Cat Stevens
and John Mellencamp. His extremely enjoyable brand of acoustic rock is sure to keep him traveling
in the future, so don't miss your chance to see him while he's close to home! --AM
LIVEWYRE

Who: Mike Kingcaid, Tom Schlener, Ginny Holsey, Ray Seifert, Mike Troxell
From: Allentown, PA
Current release: Live At The Palace (2005)
Sound clip: Rebel Yell (Billy Idol)
Review: Livewyre is an '80s classic rock/metal cover band from the Lehigh Valley.
Their repertoire includes fist-pumping sing-along classics from Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, AC/DC,
Guns n' Roses, Poison, Alice Cooper, Van Halen, Billy Idol, and many more (with a few originals to
boot). Word is that their live shows are well worth the price of admission, and Livewyre's fans
have backed up that claim by voting them "Best Hard Rock & Metal Performance" in the 7th Annual
Lehigh Valley Music Awards. Livewyre's
influences and set lists make it clear that unabashed rock/heavy metal is king in their world - and really,
why should it be any other way? --AM

Who: Chris Gyomber, Chuck Zaorski, Greg Uzar, Miron Uzar
From: Reading, PA
Current release: Living Pastry (2000)
Sound clip: Checkers
Review: On their self-titled debut album, Living Pastry
has assembled a set of well-crafted, emotionally-charged rock songs. Among their influences
are Nirvana, Alice In Chains, U2 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I also sense a strong
Silverchair influence at times. But make no mistake: These guys have their own distinct
sound, and they've put together a great set of original tunes. Long live alt-rock! --AM

Review: Mercury is a radio-friendly modern rock band
with recognizable influences from bands like Live, U2 and Fuel. Their soaring choruses
and accessible lyrics make their debut CD an enjoyable experience from the very first
listen. I haven't seen a Mercury show yet, but their exceptionally strong originals
and no-nonsense rock attitude undoubtedly add up to a great live performance. Don't be
surprised if these guys end up getting signed in the near future! --AM

From: Baltimore, MD
Current release: Roulette Girl (1999)

Review: I think Mary herself summed it up
best when she said "Hey, if you want family entertainment, get a f**king
clown!" You can waste your time trying to categorize her (pop? punk? folk, anyone?),
but you'd be much better off sitting back and enjoying her humorous take on
life. --AM

Review: Moodroom is an exciting female-fronted group from Washington,
D.C. Their Belly-meets-Garbage-meets-Pixies blend of alt-rock, pop and trip hop has earned
them critical acclaim and a loyal following. Indie label Fowl Records (Jimmie's Chicken
Shack) picked up on the band's radio-friendly sound and signed them in December 2001.
With their first full-length disc now on the market, a strong label behind them, and an
ever-increasing fan base, Moodroom has nowhere to go but up! --AM
JOSHUA MOYER

Who: Joshua Moyer
From: Jacksonville, FL
Current release: Left Handed Compliment (2005)
Sound clip: The Light
Review: Joshua Moyer, originally from Reading, PA, recently relocated
to Jacksonville, Florida. But thanks to the highly-connected world we're living in, that's no excuse
for losing touch with his wonderful original music! Simply visit his web site to hear what he has to
offer (and to order his CD). A classically-trained tenor, Moyer's past recordings have included his
performances of the works of Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Massenet and others. But his latest disc,
Left Handed Compliment focus squarely on his rock side, offering seven acoustic rock originals
that showcase his enormous talent as singer, songwriter and performer. And, hey, if you're ever in the
Jacksonville area... :-) --AM

From: Lancaster, PA
Current release: From All Thoughts Everywhere (2002)
Sound clip: She Makes Me
Review: Although they've been playing the
local scene since 1994, it wasn't until late 2001 that Negative Space found
their perfect lineup. They released a much-anticipated EP in the summer of
2002, and have simply been blowing audiences away with their insanely
energetic live shows. Negative Space's finely-crafted power-pop/punk/rock
originals fit perfectly with their selection of covers, and strongly
suggest that this band is ready for the big time! --AM
ORIGINAL BLACK DOG
URL: http://www.originalblackdog.com
Who: Nick Caprari, Julio Caprari, Bill Guerin
From: Pittston, PA
Current release: The Cave (2003)
Sound clip: Cave
Review: If you are going to be forever linked to one band, Led Zeppelin
isn't a bad choice. Original Black Dog borrowed their name from the title of a Led Zeppelin song
("Black Dog"), and basically started out as a Led Zeppelin tribute band. Covering their heroes' songs
inspired them to write original material, much of which definitely has a Led Zeppelin feel. While the
Zeppelin influence is unmistakable, the influence of the Allman Brothers Band is equally evident in
Original Black Dog's extended jams. Add a dash of jazz and blues to their classic rock influences, and
you have a very "original" band, indeed. Definitely worth a listen! --AM
OUTTA LINE
URL: http://www.outtalinerocks.com
Who: Jeff Schenck, Troy Moyer, Chris Marinock, Jay Krouse
From: Hazleton, PA
Current release: Welcome To Reality (2005)
Sound clip: Broken Boy
Review: Outta Line is an all-originals hard rock band from
Northeastern PA. Their songs feature crunchy guitars and precise rhythms that form a perfect
complement for vocals that range in style from melodic to rap to an all-out shout/growl. The band
members cite diverse influences including '80s, '90s and '00s hard rock (Pantera, Metallica, Slayer,
Marylin Manson, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Godsmack, Disturbed, Thrice, etc.), classic rock (Lynard Skynard),
punk (Rancid) and rap (Eminem, 50 cent). It's the amalgamation of these styles that gives Outta Line
their unique high-energy sound. Check 'em out! --AM

Who: Mike Krakosky, Rick Carr, Ron Scavone, Michael Evans
From: Wilkes-Barre, PA
Current release: Bad Math (2003)
Sound clip: By the Sea
Review: Plus 3's press kit fittingly describes their music as
"a tasteful blend of intelligent, melodic writing, ringing acoustic guitars, and first-class vocals."
The band cites influences ranging from The Beatles to R.E.M. to Weezer. While these influences do
shine through, Plus 3 reminds me even more of two other great bands: Gin Blossoms and Toad The Wet
Sprocket (and I've found that I'm not the first reviewer to feel that way!). If you're a fan of
any of these bands, or well-crafted melodic pop/rock in general, check out Plus 3! --AM
POPTART MONKEYS
URL: http://www.poptartmonkeys.com
Who: Tyson Clark, Chris Kurtz, Rob Hampton, James Balogach
From: Hazleton, PA
Current release: Secret Decoder Outfit (2003)
Sound clip: Hooked
Review: The Poptart Monkeys drew national attention early in their
career when Kellogg's tried to force them to stop using the Poptart name. Fast-forward to the present,
and the name remains and the music only grows stronger. With the recent release of their third album
in four years, the Poptart Monkeys have captured some of the energy they give off at each and every
one of their shows. Spanning genres from modern rock to pop to '80's metal, the Poptart Monkeys have
something to offer for everyone! --AM

Sound clip: Nobody's Hero
Review: Local bands that last 20 or more years are few and far
between. Position is one such band. Position has been playing its '80s style hard rock since 1982,
and has enjoyed both local and international success. The band's style draws comparisons to Judas Priest,
Dokken, Kiss, AC/DC. If you like no-nonsense guitar rock, check these guys out! --AM

Current release: Second Helping (2002)
Sound clip: Come
Review: SDI's self-described "marriage of Black Sabbath and Tool"
sound comes through loud and clear on their EP, Second Helping. This hard rock band
operates on what they describe as the "F.I.P. Principle: Fun, Intensity and Precision." Rock on! --AM
SEIZURE 17
URL: http://www.seizure17.com
Who: Colin McLaughlin, Jamie Campbell, Stan The Robot
From: Philadelphia, PA
Current release: Too Pretty For A Riot (2006)
Sound clip: Too Pretty For A Riot
Review: A three-piece band on a minor technicality ("Stan the Robot" is the drummer),
Philadelphia-based Seizure 17 has the minimalistic sound of a two-piece. Citing diverse influences ranging from
The Stooges to Sex Pistols to Smashing Pumpkins to The White Stripes, the band has a unique, dissonant sound accentuated
by Colin's droning, in-your-face lead vocals and Jamie's opera-trained backing vocals. Seizure 17's decidedly sparse, low-fi
sound makes them stand out in a time when so many bands fill every space with noise. Check 'em out! --AM

Sound clip: Never In Vain
Review: Seventh Hour formed in October 2001, and is quickly turning heads
with their originals influenced by an eclectic mix of progressive rock, classic rock and modern rock. Don't
be fooled by this band's newness: The members have plenty of experience under their belts from past projects.
Definitely a band worth hearing!
SIMON APPLE
URL: http://www.simonapple.com
Who: Buzz Saylor, Jeff Miller, Dan Merrill
From: Wernersville, PA
Current release: River To The Sea (2004)
Sound clip: Weight Of The World
Review: Simon Apple combines elements of pop, progressive rock and jazz
with positive, inspirational lyrics. To say their resume is impressive is a vast understatement. The
band has had two songs in the Top 30 on the Adult Contemporary Gavin chart, and their recent
River To The Sea album features several world-renowned musicians, including engineer David Leonard,
bassist Tony Levin, guitarist Buck Dharma, saxophonist John Helliwell, cellist Hugh McDowell, bassist
Steve Rodby, trumpeter Dave Stahl, and more! See the band's web site for nice write-ups on each guest
artist. Simon Apple has a sound unlike any eastern PA band I've ever heard - a definite must-hear! --AM
THE SKYLINE DRIVE

Who: Dave, Hans, Jared, Justin
From: Reading, PA
Current release: Get It Together (2003)
Sound clip: Now
Review: The Skyline Drive masterfully deliver a pleasing blend
of punk and pop/rock. The band's hook-filled songs feature driving guitars, a tight rhythm
section, and extremely catchy melodies. The song "Now", in particular, would fit nicely in any
modern rock radio station's playlist. Definitely a band worth checking out! --AM
SPITSHINE
URL: http://www.spitshinemusic.com
Who: Bryan Harmony, Larry Werner, Jeff Hasz, Doug Moye
From: Allentown, PA
Current release: Transaudio (2004)
Sound clip: Satellite
Review: Spitshine is an all-original rock quartet that has been on the local
scene for more than five years. The band's sophomore CD, Transaudio, is a killer collection of rockers that
demand to be sung along to. If you're looking for one of the Lehigh Valley's very best, look no further than
Spitshine! --AM
STRAITLACED
URL: http://www.straitlacedrocks.com
Who: Dan Sinkler, Viv Peyrat, Andy Sinkler, Leland Weeks
From: Abington, PA
Current release: Straitlaced (2005)
Sound clip: Burn
Review: Straitlaced is a power punk/pop quartet that lists
The Used, Matchbook Romance, Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday as influences.
The band sets itself apart with catchy melodies and lyrics that are complemented by killer grooves,
impressive guitar solos, and off-the-charts drumming. As if the band needed more credentials,
the Sinkler brothers are grandchildren of jazz great Charlie Parker. Straitlaced is definitely
a standout in a crowded Philadelphia local music scene. Keep an eye on 'em! --AM
SUTURE SEVEN
URL: http://www.sutureseven.com
Who: Elton Nestler, Michael Zucker, Jamie Gibson, Lorie K, Amber Ortega
From: Hummelstown, PA
Current release: Suture Seven (2003)
Sound clip: Apparatus of Demise
Review: Suture Seven delivers a unique sound in the local music scene.
Quite possibly the only Harrisburg-area band carrying the torch for the goth/industrial/rock genre,
Suture Seven describes their sound as "melancholy to madness and back again." The band's buzzing guitars,
driving rhythms and intense vocals result in several songs that would have fit comfortably on an older
Nine Inch Nails album. Take a walk on the dark side and check these guys out! --AM
T-4'S ROCKAFOLKABLUESBAND
URL: http://www.rockafolkablues.com
Who: T-4, Dave Fabry, John Miller
From: Sullivan County, PA
Current release: Covered Bridge Chronicles (2005)
Sound clip: Way Back When
Review: T-4's RockaFolkaBluesBand is a trio from rural Sullivan
County, PA who deliver a pleasing blend of - you guessed it! - rock, folk and blues. The three
talented members played together in a house band in a Philadelphia bar before forming the
decidedly rootsy-sounding T-4's RockaFolkaBluesBand. Their unique sound and undeniable stage
presence have appealed to fans of any of the three genres they combine, as well as people who
aren't fans of any of the above. Definitely worth a listen! --AM
UNCLE $AM

From: Harrisburg, PA
Current release: Love in a Blender (1997)
Sound clip: Love in a Blender
Review: Uncle $am is a songwriting/performing duo
that formed in 1984. In their own words, Love in a Blender is "about all
the emotions of any relationship put into the proverbial blender." Based on the
Uncle $am name, I was half-expecting politically-driven music about the USA. But
don't be fooled by their moniker; The Uncle $am name mainly represents good
old-fashioned American rock and roll! --AM
ULTRA HIGH FREQUENCY
URL: http://www.ultrahighmusic.com
Who: Frank Fussa Jr., Christopher Johanidesz, Jonathan A. Tehel, Dennis Joseph
From: Long Island, NY
Current release: Matter In Time (2006)
Sound clip: Hi-Sea
Review: Ultra High Frequency is a four-piece band originally from Long Island, New York,
that recently decided to relocate to California in an effort to further their career. If their 2006 sophomore album,
Matter In Time, is any indication, the band will not have any trouble finding fans on the Left Coast. Their
hook-laden guitar-based power-pop tunes won them an opening slot on Brand New's summer 2006 tour, and their catchy
melodies and three-part harmonies are sure to reel you in, too! --AM
VALEZE
URL: http://www.valeze.net
Who: Tiffany Randol, AC Delco, Joe H, Tim Grace, Miles Kennedy
From: Brooklyn, NY
Current release: Valeze (2006 EP)
Sound clip: Hard To Forget (from 2002's Come Undone)
Review: Valeze is a female-fronted band from New York City that promises
to bring "glamour, pop and punk to the stage." Frontwoman Tiffany Randol grew up in Pennsylvania before
moving to New York to attend NYU. There, she earned her music degree and made the contacts that would
eventually lead to the formation of Valeze. The band cites Blondie, the Clash and the Sex Pistols as
its primary influences, and should appeal to fans of those bands and fans of more recent female-fronted
bands such as Garbage and No Doubt. Valeze has the songs, sound, look and attitude to set itself apart
from the pack, and is sure to be an exciting band to follow in 2006 and beyond! --AM
VERITAS
URL: http://www.veritas4.com

From: Allentown, PA
Current release: Earworm (1999)
Sound clip: Straight Razors and Doll Babies
Review: If you think you've heard of Veritas before, you probably
have, since it is the Latin word for "truth". The truth on this band is that they deliver a
thrash metal and electronica hybrid that few bands - local or otherwise - have touched upon.
The closest comparisons I've seen for Veritas are Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails and Pantera
(vocally), but you'll have to hear them for yourself and make your own call! --AM
VERTIGO HAZE
URL: http://www.vertigohaze.net
Who: Shawn Mitchell, Rick Hess, Rick Taormino

Sound clip: My Demise
Review: Vertigo Haze was formed in Richmond, VA in 1997. Founding
member Shawn Mitchell relocated to PA in 1999, and in 2002 formed the band's new lineup. Using the
tagline "Classic Rock with a Twist", Vertigo Haze cites influences from Paul McCartney to Peter Frampton
to Soundgarden. They pride themselves on their covers, but also play a number of originals varying in
style from "Beatle-y" to "Southern Rock meets Alternative". Catch one of their live shows and see for
yourself! --AM
WHEELING BITCH CIRCUS

Who: Allan Eustace, Andy Barndt, John Rowe, Nate DiDonato, Steve Romano, Matt Grill
From: North Wales, PA
Current release: Fallen Angel (2006)
Sound clip: Down In Tears
Review: Wheeling Bitch Circus describe their style as "aggressive and melodic heavy metal",
and after one listen to their album, I think you'll understand why! The band's three-guitar punch ensures a consistently
full sound, even during Nate's awe-inspiring guitar leads and solos. WBC's grooves are tight and their songwriting highly
polished, and Al's vocals range from highly melodic to throat-annihilating screaming. This is heavy metal the way it
should be played! --AM
JAY YOUNG
URL: http://www.jayyoungmusic.com
Who: Jay Young
From: Norristown, PA
Current release: The Road Goes Other Places (2004)
Sound clip: Color of Love
Review: Philadelphia's own Jay Young is making quite a name for himself,
impressing audiences with his live shows and his debut CD, The Road Goes Other Places.
Young's live shows are the culmination of 20 years of performing experience, and feature any of 200
cover tunes in addition to his original material. Drawing from influences such as The Allman Brothers Band,
Bob Dylan and James Taylor, Young seamlessly blends elements of rock, pop, country and blues to arrive at a
style all his own. Young's debut album was recorded at Saturation Acres Studio with backing music by none
other than Bret Alexander, Paul Smith and Ron Simasek of Cellarbirds/Badlees fame. Give Jay Young a listen today! --AM
ZELAZOWA
URL: http://www.zelazowa.com
Who: Brian Weber, Ian Sharkey, Kyle Weber, Terry Sharkey
From: Philadelphia, PA
Current release: Rest Easy (2005)
Sound clip: 1,000 Smiles
Review: Proving once again that rock bands can't always be lumped
into one convenient category, Zelazowa combines elements of classic rock, punk, alternative, hard rock
and emo to arrive at a hard-hitting, polished rock sound. "1,000 Smiles", "Propeller" and "Swooner"
evoke the metal/alternative fusion style made popular by Alice in Chains, while the angst-ridden
"Maniacal Man", "Lipig" and "Perch" wouldn't seem out of place on a System of a Down album.
"Army of Negotiables", "Entry #1" and "The Harlequin" are like punk rock on speed, and contrast sharply
with the melodic slow-burner "Dandelions". Making these varied styles hang together on one album
is no small feat, but Zelazowa pulls it off nicely. Now why don't you go check them out, and let's
just refer to them as a rock band from here on out, OK? :-) --AM
